Plant coleus in a sunny or shady location (depending on variety) in a rich, well-drained soil. If you are growing coleus in containers use a commercial potting soil mix. Pinch the plants if they start to grow tall and leggy. This will encourage the plant to remain compact and bushy. Coleus does not like to dry out so water whenever the soil becomes barely dry. In the late summer many coleus varieties develop flower spikes. Just clip them off if you want a tidier look. Coleus is not recommended for human or animal consumption.
